What You Can Learn From Reading Google Patents

Google patent search allows you to search for patents that are registered with the government. Their advanced search allows you to state several search parameters. You can search by patent number, company or individual who was given the patent, date of getting the patent, date of filing the patent and several other options.
When you search all the patents filed and assigned to Google, Inc. you will get back a plethora of information. If you want to know what Google is up to in new developments, you can search by their most recent filings.
Recent filings for 2010 include search query optimizations for business listings. Businesses will benefit from the new patent because it will deliver more relevant business results. For example, when a searcher does a search for film development an association can be made with the words photo finishing even though the two words have no actual words in common. Refining a process of categorizations for businesses can help return better search results.
Google uses training data to artificially learn from search entries. According to the patent filing, the first thing that needs to be done is to create business categories relevant to specific search queries. The categorization classification component can learn from the search queries and business categories, based on training data. Data is selected from predefined yellow page listings, categorized business websites, consumer report information, restaurant guides, query traffic data and advertising data. The input is then stored as a series of possibilities.
If you are totally baffled by now, just know that business searches are going to become much more relevant, which is good news for business websites.
Try a search in the Google patent search and see what you come up with. Perhaps you’ll search by patent number and learn that patent number 1,000,000 was for an improvement made in vehicle tires, patented in 1911.

How To Create A Database Using MySQL

What is MySQL?
MySQL is a relational database management system that is used on websites like Google, Facebook, Wikipedia, WordPress Sites, and many business sites. Many websites use MySQL and a front end system called phpMyAdmin which is made available at no charge through many web hosting companies. PhpMyAdmin makes it easy for the end user to import large amounts of data from csv files and text files and create a database.
Who Invented MySQL?
Ulf Michael Widenius, from Finland was the developer of MySQL and named the program after his daughter, My. It was released for the first time in 1996. Sun Microsystems purchased it on February 26, 2008, making Ulf Michael Widenius, one of the top ten money earners in Finland.
How To Create A Database
To understand how to use these tools to make your website better, you’ll need to know how to create an Excel spreadsheet file. Since Excel is so widely used, you are probably familiar with using it. You can easily see that information is basically stored in columns and rows.
Imagine that you had a physical store that sold colored balls in a variety of colors and sizes made in a variety of materials and sold at different prices. You could create a spreadsheet that contained all of this information. Each product would be put in one row. Each attribute would be listed in columns on that row. This format is what you need to create a MySQL database.
So how do you get your Excel file into the MySQL database? You will need to save this Excel file as a comma separated value file.
Log in to your web hosting account. Find the Database Wizard to create a database. When you create this database you’ll be given a username and password to get into it. Write that down so you’ll remember it. You will need it later.
Now you want to find the phpMyAdmin button and open that link. The screen you see will show you the database name that you just created. Click on the name of the database.
How To Create A Table
You have to create a table to hold the information you are about to import into it. The table you create will have column headings for each of the attributes you created in your spread sheet. You can have any number of columns you desire.
Find the word operations and open that link. Create the table by giving it a name and stating how many columns you want in your table. It will have to match the number of columns in your spreadsheet. Click go to create the table.
You’ll see a table that looks like an empty spread sheet. In the field column, you want to name all of the columns a single word or if you use two words, you need to join them with an underscore. Fill in all of the fields you can.
Choose a type for each column. Generally you’ll need to start with VARCHAR which allows the text to be a variety of characters. Then you’ll need to decide how big the field will be. Some fields will just be two characters and others may be up to 255. If you need more space than that to store your data, you’ll have to choose LONGTEXT. There are specific paramaters that the other columns need, but you don’t have to fill them all in. You will have to decide whether you need to have an empty field (null) or have it filled (not null).
Determine which field you want as your primary field and select that option. Usually one field needs to be primary so you may want to make that your productID which is usually unique as well.
Click go and the table gets created for you. You’ll see that you can browse your table but nothing will be in it yet.
How To Import Data Into A Table
Choose the import function in the horizontal row above the table. You’ll attach the csv file that you saved to your computer. Then you check the option CSV using LOAD DATA. You will need to change the fields terminated by a semicolon to fields terminated by a comma. That means just erase the semi colon and put a comma in place of it. Click go and your data gets imported into the new table. View your data through the browse button.
Now you have a database that has data in it. You can create as many tables as you would like to and you can also import more data by following the above steps. The information in the database is stored through your hosting company. The next thing you will want to learn is how to use the data you just put into your database. You’ll want to display the data on your website.
Expect the Unexpected With Internet Startups

Great Expectations
I have cut, sliced and diced hundreds of onions. So many that when I cut this onion open and saw these funny faces smiling back at me, I had to laugh. I was amazed at how perfect these images seemed. To refresh my memory of what onions normally look like, I cut into another onion and found the look I usually find – one center and concentric circles. This onion produced two smiley faces. Totally unexpected! Sometimes it is better to expect the unexpected.
In any business people try to predict their success and rely on statistics to back up their predictions. With the Internet this method doesn’t always work.
Many people start Internet businesses and plan to be successful. They’ve got a great business idea and they invest money and time towards building the business. They literally do everything they can do. What sometimes happens is that they don’t get enough traffic to sustain the business and they stop trying. This is not what they expected.
The Unexpected
On the other hand there are people who start an Internet business and have no expectations of being wildly successful, but they enjoy trying new things and testing different methods of getting their business to work. They actual stumble upon little ideas and little tricks that end up making their business earn more money. Repeating this as a regular work habit can make the site profitable.
Think about your expectations of your Internet business. Is it going well or is it a project that you have abandoned?
In a search for “websites that fail” an article was listed called The number 1 Reason Why Most Websites Fail. You would expect this site to tell you about reasons sites fail, however this site was an example of failure. Mistakes on the page were causing major errors that failed to pull in the correct information in five different areas. This is the advice they give.
Websites do fail. Lots of them fail. You will see many of them every day. Some of them fail to inspire or enthuse. Some fail to get found at all. Some fail to get completed. Some fail to understand the needs of the people visiting them. But there is an underlying common reason for all these failings..
This site expected to be an authority on why websites fail, but lost credibility because their own site was failing. That wasn’t what was expected.
Finding Success With Internet Start Ups
In 1969, Honeywell International Inc. developed a computer that sold for $10,600. It was advertised as a kitchen computer because back then, the engineers decided that the only reason people would want to use a personal computer at home was to store recipes. That was what they expected people to wanted to do. Not one of the computers they designed sold. Did they expect that when developing this product? I’m quite sure they didn’t.
When you start your business on the Internet remember to expect the unexpected. It will give you patience while you work on your site and build it and continue to build it. Success for you may be right around the corner.
In life there is nothing more unexpected and surprising than the arrivals and departures of pleasure. If we find it in one place to-day, it is vain to seek it there to-morrow. You can not lay a trap for it.
~ Alexander Smith, Scottish poet
Creativity comes from looking for the unexpected and stepping outside your own experience.
~Masaru Ibuka, co-founder of Sony Corporation
Sometimes it is better to expect the unexpected.

Ten Empowering Thoughts for Your Internet Business
October 26, 2008 by Sherry Tingley

Last week, I listened to Brian Campbell, a successful Internet marketer, give a webinar on social media marketing. During that talk he had people think about the belief system they had and whether or not their beliefs where empowering them or limiting them. He pointed out that every action we take begins with a thought.
The audience was asked to identify thoughts that were either empowering or limiting in nature. Here are ten empowering thoughts that were selected.
- There is an abundance of money.
- People deserve to be compensated generously for the value they produce.
- I can spend money freely to enjoy life.
- I can make money very easily with very little effort.
- Money flows to me easily.
- I would like to compensate people for their value because I appreciate them.
- Money is to be enjoyed.
- You are priceless.
- The past is not my future.
- I can get many people to act on something.
It seems to be human nature to dwell on some very limiting beliefs, which guide our course of action. How often have you told yourself that there is scarcity in your life? Or lately, the economy is so bad, no one is making any money. Recognizing and replacing our limiting beliefs is crucial to our success in any field of business or any area of our lives.
Would you picture yourself as someone who could influence others to take action? And don’t think of the times you’ve asked your children to clean up their rooms. Think of the times that you’ve recommended a great movie to your friends.
Could you become a person that could influence 100 people to take the action you want them to take? A 100,000 or 100,000,000? How would you do it? What would you say? What could you write?
Mark Zuckerberg influenced over 100 million people to use his website application at www.facebook.com. He is now enjoying the billionaire status as noted in Forbes magazine, The 400 Richest People in America, 2008 edition.
Create your website business plan to get as many people as you can to take the action you would like them to take. There are approximately 6,732,600,000 people in this world to influence! Keep empowering beliefs in the forefront of your mind as you create a successful website business plan that can move people to take action!
