Would Oprah Make a Good Senator?

What do you think of Oprah being appointed President Obama’s old senate seat?

On the first day of Blagojevich’s impeachment  trial for conspiracy and bribery charges, Blagojevich announces that he’s considering nominating Oprah Winfrey to fill the empty U.S. Senate seat left by President Barack Obama. Is there anything else he could do to draw more attention to himself than that?

In an article on USA Today,  we read that:

”She was obviously someone with a much broader bully pulpit than other senators,” Blagojevich said. But the Democrat said appointing Winfrey might have been perceived as a gimmick — and that Winfrey probably would not have accepted the appointment anyway.”

What was Oprah’s response?

Oprah said that she was pretty amused by the whole thing and that she would have fallen off her treadmill if she had been working out on it.

She is definitely, not interested.

CNN conducted a phone in survery and here is what several people said:

James from Brooklyn, New York,  says that Oprah may not be bi-partisan. Her opinions may not reflect the opinions of the rest of the country.

Sharese from Seattle, Washington says that she would be the perfect Senator because she understands poverty, she’s totally involved in the community and she can definitely handle it.

Larry, from Louisian said that Blagojevich is a cynical and evil person and that by considering Oprah as a Senator because he ultimatley wants someone in the position to help him get his own way.

job-security Management Recruiters of Salt Lake City was recently listed in Utah Business Magazine, as one of the best places to work in Utah. With so many companies watching out for their own bottom line, people are left to scramble to just keep their jobs let alone feel secure and happy in their employment.

Management Recruiters is one of the world’s largest search and recruitment organizations. They provide services for small-to-mid-size firms as well as Fortune 500 companies in a number of specialized industry segments.

Some of the reasons that people like working for their company is that Dirk Cortell, president of Management Recruiters of Salt Lake City actually watches out for his employees and says that he hasn’t had to lay anyone off for eighteen years.

What makes this company fun to work for?

“Although we have a professional dress code, the men don’t wear ties,” he says. “We also have a workout facility, a kitchen stocked with many free items, and various office outings and incentive trips. In-fact 12 couples from the company just returned from a seven day Southern Carribean cruise with stops in St Thomas, St Maarten, Antigua, St Lucias and Barbados.”

Advice for hiring new employees

Based on his nearly twenty years as a recognized expert in the area of hiring, Cotterell offers practical advice for hiring and retaining the right people:

  • Look for people who have a recent successful track record, who are smart and who have stable personal lives.
  • If you don’t connect with the candidates, don’t hire them.
  • Determine upfront whether your opportunity aligns with the candidates’ ambitions.
  • Once you’ve made the hire, strive to bond with your people.
  • Provide a stable, ethical and professional environment, as well as the resources your people need for success.
  • Assuming you hired right, don’t give up prematurely on people.

In a recent press release, the keys to Cotterell’s success were shared with everyone.

The effectiveness of Cotterell’s approach to hiring and retention was underscored recently by the selection of Management Recruiters of Salt Lake City as one of seventeen companies recognized by Utah Business Magazine as the best companies to work for in the state. In addition, the Mountain West Capital Network cited the company in the “Fastest Growing Category” of the Utah 100, a program that highlights the achievements of both emerging and mature businesses in Utah.

Management Recruiters of Salt Lake City was the only company in the state of Utah that achieved both awards in 2008. The company is also ranked number three in 2008 among the more than 1,000 offices within MRINetwork.

Developing a Millionaire Mindset

Do you have a millionaire mindset? Have you ever questioned your attitudes toward wealth and money? Do you think you are deserving of the lifestyle you might only dream of right now? Is it possible that something deep inside of you feels that you don’t deserve to be prosperous?
millionaire-mind-attitudes

Sometimes we hold ourselves back from realizing our dreams because of the attitudes we have been raised with or developed in response to life’s challenges. A lot of people take the safe road home and never risk dreaming about how things could be different.

Several months ago, I attended a local art show in Salt Lake City, Utah to support one of my dear friends. As I searched for the art show, I had to walk at least a half a mile through a convention center to finally find the rooms where the art show was being held. The art show looked great but apparently was poorly attended. Possibly because it was so difficult to find.

As I made my way out of the convention center I noticed a huge gathering of people in another conference room where hundreds of people were intently listening to the guest speaker. I thought that it was too bad all these people weren’t at the art show. I tried to get as close as I could to hear the speaker without having someone throw me out.

These are the wonderful tidbits of advice I was able to get from that meeting of the Millionaire Mind Intensive program, for which I am grateful and would like to share with you.

Attitudes of Wealth – Winning the Mind Game

  • I create my life. I create the exact amount of my financial success.
  • I play the money game to win. My intention is to create wealth and abundance.
  • I admire and model rich and successful people.
  • I believe money is important, money is freedom and money makes life more enjoyable.
  • I get rich doing what I love.
  • I deserve to be rich because I add value to other people’s lives.
  • I am a generous giver and excellent receiver.
  • I am truly grateful for all the money I have now.
  • Lucrative opportunities always come my way.
  • My capacity to earn, hold and grow money expands day-by-day

Attitudes of Wealth – Winning the Money Game

  • I am an excellent money manager.
  • I always pay myself first.
  • I put money into my Financial Freedom Account every day.
  • My money works hard for me and makes me more and more money.
  • I earn enough passive income to pay for my desired lifestyle.
  • I am financially free. I work because I choose to, not because I have to.
  • My part-time business is managing and creating passive income streams.

Perhaps we can adopt some of these attitudes of wealth to help us create a more successful personal finance story.

If you have experienced using these positive thinking Millionaire Mind Mantras, please share your story!

Martin Luther King Remembered

Martin Luther King Day

Bishop John C. Wester of the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City, Utah, spoke at a recent luncheon held to honor Martin Luther King. It was inspirational and I felt honored to be able to attend. I wish that more people could have heard this speech. A small part of Bishop Wester’s speech is included in the video below.

For those that have trouble hearing this speech, I have included part of it below:

He did much to leave our country a better place, where peace and harmony could thrive. He brought us a long, long way. And although we have a long way to go, we are not defeated. We are after all a people of hope. A hope enlivened by President-elect Obama, in his historic journey to the white house. He has proven that Martin’s dream is more than that. It is a vision of greater things to come. The first installments of which we are all living in these days of transition. It is fitting then that we pause to remember Martin Luther King Jr. today as we anticipate the inauguration next week.

Ours is an arduous task as we seek to live the values that Martin Luther King espoused.

Taking that path of Desmond Tutu, we seek to fashion a country that embraces eulogy, harmony, and peace.

While this task is daunting, there are ways to begin immediately. For example, this January 19th is a Martin Luther King Jr. day of service. Based on his quote, “Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve,” we are inspired to strengthen our communities and achieve common goals through service.”

Last year, hundreds of thousands of citizens across the nation participated in this day of service. What a great way to honor Martin Luther King. Not by taking the day off, but by making the 19th a day of service.

The Drum Major Awards luncheon has been held annually in Utah to pay tribute to community leaders that showed the “drum major instinct, that Martin Luther King referred to during a talk in a 1968 sermon. In that sermon, King requested that he would be remembered as a person who tried to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, be right on the [Vietnam] war question, and love and serve humanity.

Martin Luther King gave over 2,000 speeches in his lifetime and is known as a human rights icon. In 1963, when he led people in the March on Washington, to deliver his I have a dream, speech he became known as one of the greatest orators in United States history. Martin Luther King was one of the youngest people to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in ending racial segregation. He was assasinated on April 4, 1968.

His legacy however, lives on.
