More About Whippet Dogs

If you would like to own a playful dog, a Whippet is what you are looking for. A breed coming from the sight hound family, Whippets are good hunters because of their speed and their eyesight. These dogs were also used as race dogs in olden times because of their incredible speed.

If you take a closer look, Whippets are very similar to small greyhounds. The medium-sized dog has an average weight of 25 to 40 lbs and stands around 20 inches for males while emales are slightly smaller in height and a lot lighter in terms of weight. What is interesting to note about these dogs is that, Whippets are larger in the US compared to their Canadian counterparts. The reason why they are larger is unknown but they probably have been bred that way to conform with show standards.

Whippets come in many colors, from solid white to solid black with blue, brindle, fawn red or cream spots. There is no standard color in Whippets because all colors are accepted in dog shows.

Whippets are very gentle dogs and they are also very quiet making them perfect companions for those who live in apartments. Because of their loving nature, they can be quite attached to their masters and are also very friendly to visitors. These dogs do not snap, making them great with children and old people. They have been used as therapy dogs in health care facilities and aged care centers for generations. With this kind of temperament, Whippets are not suited to work as guard dogs. They however hate cats more than other dogs especially if these cats are invading their territory. Whippets can be friendly to cats if you raise them with cats but they do not develop that in a short period of time.

Whippets are happiest when indoors. They do not like to stay outside because their coats are not suitable for cold temperatures. Most Whippets can be found lounging with their masters or even sleeping on their master's lap. They still need some exercise though but not as frequent as other breeds.

The breed is a great show dog. Although not as popular as poodles, they are quite elegant-looking and are easy to groom. Whippets are also known for their "smile". With their friendly nature, they always seem to be smiling with their jaws opened from ear to ear.

Most Whippets live for about 15 years, some even more if they are well taken care of. They however have an almost arrhythmic heartbeat which usually concerns most owners. This should not be a cause for concern because this is natural with this breed. They are unusually healthy and rarely have any type of hereditary disorders. This does not mean however that they are free from diseases. It is unusual for a Whippet to be unhealthy or have any type of chronic illness.

Whippets are also featured in commercials for pet stores, ads for cars and even cookies. They are very effective endorsers because they are absolutely irresistible.
