All About The German Shepherd

Order personal checks with German Shepherds on them. Matching address labels and checkbook covers are also available.

The German Shepherd, a breed of muscular, strong and well proportioned dogs that come from Germany has its origins dating back to 1899. These dogs were originally developed to herd sheep but because of their intelligence, strength and obedience, they later on became police and war dogs, not only in Germany but around the globe. German Shepherds are very loyal dogs and are very protective in nature. Because of these characteristics, these dogs have become one of the most popular pets.

In the 1800's Europe, standardizing breeds became a trend. Preserving certain characteristics and traits in dogs was the standard to make working dogs. This standardization was mainly for herding purposes and for protecting flocks from other animals. In Germany at the time, this kind of standardization of breeds was used by local communities. Shepherd dogs were bred and these dogs had to have a keen sense of smell, strength and of course intelligence.

The German Shepherd of today is a product of the standardization process. They come in various colors, the most common colors are the red and black and tan and black varieties. Known for their intelligence, German Shepherds can easily understand instructions and can undergo through training without much fuss. They are very willing to learn and have the eagerness to have a part or a purpose that is why German Shepherds are the best choice for rescue operations, military operations and police work.

German shepherds are not very friendly dogs, they are approachable but they do not befriend strangers immediately. They are very loyal dogs but can sometimes be over-protective of their owners and their territory. Socializing them correctly at an early age is an advantage.

German Shepherds as Working Dogs

Known as police dogs, German Shepherds are used for patrolling troubled areas, tracking criminals, detection of suspects and holding them and of course in military operations. This goes back to Vietnam when the US Army used German Shepherds for patrolling the vast rice fields. German Shepherds work well even if in a chaotic environment because they cannot be distracted easily. They are even used for scent-work roles i.e. for search and rescue operations, narcotics detection, cadaver search, accelerant detection, mine detection and explosives detection.

At one point, before Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers were used for such work, the German Shepherd was also the best selection for guide dogs. Today, very few German Shepherds are trained in this line of work. Because of their versatility, they can work well in any kind of environment, they have a very strong sense of duty, they are fearless, intelligent and are very loyal and attached to their owners.

German Shepherds in Movies

Lots of movies have featured the German Shepherd. The very first one is Strongheart followed by the famous Rin Tin Tin. These two dogs have Hollywood Walk of Fame stars. K-9 is also another movie with a real police dog in it. I Am Legend has a Germand Shepherd playing as Will Smith's dog in the movie.

Apart from that, Adolf Hitler's dog, a German Shepherd has appeared in many documentaries. In the comic book industry, Batman's German Shepherd is also another German Shepherd celebrity dog.
