All About Shelties
Sometimes called the Shetland Collie, the Sheltie belongs to the herding dog category and since it is a herding dog, it comes complete with a herding dog temperament. These dogs are very vocal dogs and are always striving to please their masters. In the past, they were used as herders. They hail from the Shetland Islands where they used to herd and protect sheep. Shelties are not big dogs contrary to how they look in pictures, in fact, they only measure 13 to 16 inches. They are however very strong and very energetic as well. The history of the Sheltie is not known but it is believed that it is a cross between the Spitz and a sheepdog. Some Shelties today still look like the Shelties in the 1900s - they are the ones who are solid white and brown markings. Coats and Colors The breed comes in myriad of colors, you just have to take a look at the different colors that these dogs have and see which one appeals to you the most. Some of the colors of their coat are mahogany, gold, a mix of white, tan and black and blue merle which is composed of grey and other colors. Shelties have a double coat. The top layer is composed of long rough hairs while the undercoat is soft and smooth. Their overcoat is water repellent and helps them regulate their body temperature during warm and cold weather.
The Sheltie Temperament
The Sheltie is a great companion. It is intensely loyal and is lively, strives hard to please its masters and very smart. They can be aloof with strangers however but if trained well, they can be very friendly to visitors as well. The love to herd and chase things and that includes ducks, squirrels and other small animals. They also herd children from time to time especially when there are lots of kids around. Apart from herding kids they do not know, they also love to run around in open spaces such as parks and fields. But what kind of owner is best for Shelties? These dogs love to play so you must be very playful as well. Owners who are sensitive and attentive is what they require because they want to be busy with something. You should also be able to give your Sheltie lots of exercise by walking him everyday. Shelties are very intelligent. In fact they belong to the top 5 most intelligent dogs.
