Order personal checks, checkbook covers and address labels with Jack Russel Terriers on them.
Jack Russel Terriers are small and primarily white bodied dogs. They are either rough or smooth coated and were used in fox hunting. The name Jack Russel was used for years to describe a variety of white terriers but after a long legal battle only the Jack Russel Terrier Club of America have the exclusive rights to the name to describe a variant of the said terrier in the US.
These cuddly, small animals are usually confused with the Russell terrier and the Parson Russell Terrier. The Jack Russel Terrier is unique and has been preserved in appearance and working ability, they way it was for over 200 years.
These sturdy and tough animals are bred for bolting foxes from their dens. Highly athletic and highly intelligent, Jack Russel Terriers are fearless and very vocal dogs. These dogs however need to be trained because they sometimes become stubborn especially when they do not have enough socialization or interaction with their owners. Jack Russel Terriers may be small dogs but they are as athletic as the big ones. For Jack Russel Terrier owners, keep an eye out for your dog every time you two are out in the park together because he or she might start picking a fight with larger dogs.
The Jack Russel Terrier we know today was bred by John Russel, a reverend who loved hunting. Story has it that the reverend bought a dog called Trump from the milkman. The dog was small tan and white and was used for the reverend's breeding program to make a terrier that has very high stamina for hunting. The dogs bred from Trump proved to be one of the best dogs for fox hunting, much like the Jack Russel Terriers of today, the dogs were courageous with tempered aggression necessary to pursue a fox and bolt it without harming the quarry. This line of dog breed became well respected among hunters and the reverend's dogs were often requested to accompany hunt enthusiasts.
However, it is highly unlikely that the Jack Russel Terriers alive today are direct descendants of Trump as John Russel had to sell his dogs due to financial problems and when he died in the year 1883, he only had 4 non-breeding terriers left.
These dogs do not only have a great history that goes with their name, there are also a few of them who are rather popular. In April of 2007, George, a Jack Russel Terrier saved 5 kids in a carnival from an attack by two raging pitt bulls. The dog reportedly charged at the larger dogs and held these dogs at bay for the children to get away. George however was killed by the larger dogs and in the year 2009, he was awarded (posthumously) the PDSA Gold Medal an award equivalent to the George Cross. Apart from that, a former US Marine who served in Vietnam donated a Purple Heart to George's owner.
