The Great Dane also known as the Danish Gallant or the German Mastiff is a domestic dog commonly known for its giant size. Its breed has also acquired the title "Apollo of the Breeds" for it is one of the world's tallest breeds of dog. The Great Dane has a strong galloping figure as well as a well-formed body that exudes elegance and strength.

Every year, the tallest dog typically is of the Great Dane breed. Its ears are naturally floppy and triangular in shape. When Great Danes were used for hunting boars many years ago, its ears were cropped to lessen the chances of any injuries of the dog's ears. Now that they are mostly companion dogs, cropping is only done for cosmetic and traditional reasons, more common in the United States and less in Europe. Coat colors of Great Danes include six acceptable ones especially for shows- fawn, brindle, blue, black, harlequin and mantle. Other colors do come about occasionally but are not suitable for conformation shows.

The large and striking appearance of the Great Dane only contradicts its friendly nature. In fact, these dogs are referred to as gentle giants. Generally, Great Danes are approving toward other dogs, animals and humans as well. They are not the kind to chase and scare small animals away. Most of these dogs require constant exercise so they can be kept in good health and good shape. However, they do not need to be over exercised as Great Dane puppies tend to grow very large that puts them at risk for bone and joint problems.
