Civil War checks were designed in remembrance of The Civil War in America, 1861-1865, when 620,000 soldiers lost their lives. The war began because the Southern states wanted to allow slavery in their states and the newly elected President Lincoln wanted to keep the Northern states slave free. Their differences caused an illegal succession of the Southern states from the United States. On April 12, 1861 the Confederates battled to gain control of Fort Sumter, South Carolina and thus the war began. It lasted four long years. The Union soldiers outnumbered the Confederates two to one.

On April 9, 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant in Virginia. The result was the South rejoined the Union and slavery was abolished in the United States.
