A good place to start is with local media. I like statenewswire.com – not for search engines but if you have something your community might care about. For example, a Utah company got invited to the prestigious New York Toy Show. The local TV station had them on the next week, showing their product and talking about how that came about. They got orders and sales from that and used the reel in their booth at the show. They probably got a mention on an authority news site, which is good for their online marketing.

To me, if you can get the news and search engines, you have the best combination. I decide how and where to publish a press release based on the story I’m writing about. Sometimes it’s mostly for search engines (so I use an online newswire) because it’s a phrase that people search for and will help my sales. Other times I know it’s a story the media might pick up.

Ideally, it’s both.
